Zebra ZT610 and ZT620 setup guide: from unboxing to first label

Load labels and ribbon, run the Print wizard and connect the ZT610 or ZT620 to your PC in the right order for a clean first label.

    This guide takes a new ZT610 (4-inch) or ZT620 (6-inch) with colour touch display from the box to a calibrated first label. It covers tear-off printing with ribbon (thermal transfer) or without (direct thermal), and connection over USB or Ethernet. Both models share one user guide, so the steps are the same.

    You'll need
    • Labels on a 76 mm (3 in) core, up to 203 mm roll diameter: 20–114 mm wide for the ZT610, 51–180 mm for the ZT620
    • Ribbon coated on the outside, wider than the labels (thermal transfer only): 20–110 mm for the ZT610, 51–170 mm for the ZT620
    • A Windows 10 or 11 PC with administrator rights
    • A USB cable or an Ethernet cable (not included with the printer)

    Before you start

    Unpack and inspect the printer

    Check the outside of the printer and the media compartment for transport damage. Keep the packaging for a damage report and report damage or missing items to us straight away. Labels, ribbon and communication cables are not in the box. Remove the protective film from the media door window before you switch on.

    Choose a good spot

    • A solid, level surface that can carry the weight: about 22.7 kg for a base ZT610 and 26 kg for a base ZT620, more with options.
    • Open space on all sides. Never put padding under or behind the printer, as it blocks the airflow.
    • An easy-to-reach power outlet, and the network or PC within cable reach.
    • 5–40 °C for thermal transfer (0–40 °C for direct thermal), 20–85 % relative humidity, non-condensing.
    Important

    Zebra lists the ZT600 Series under the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED) security rules. The ZT610 and ZT620 have Ethernet and Bluetooth as standard, so units placed on the EU market from 1 August 2025 use a new setup process; a QR code or URL insert in the box points to the instructions. You set a Protected Mode password, which protects security and network settings, and a front-panel password (PIN), which you need to view the settings on the touch display. See zebra.com/asr and Zebra's Link-OS PrintSecure Printer Administration Guide. Store both safely: a forgotten password cannot be recovered, only reset.

    Which print mode to use

    Zebra calls the print mode the collection method. Tear Off works with every configuration. The other modes need the matching option installed:

    This guide uses Tear Off; the other modes start the same way.

    Load the labels

    Important

    The printhead can be hot enough to cause severe burns, so let it cool first. Switching the printer off is not required but Zebra recommends it when you work near an open printhead. Switching off clears temporary settings such as label formats.

    1. Raise the media door. Remove any torn or dirty labels and any labels held by glue or tape from the start of the roll.
    2. Slide the roll onto the media supply spindle (1) and push it back as far as it goes. Fanfold labels take the same path: feed them in from behind the printer or through the bottom access slot.
    3. Turn the printhead-open lever upwards to open the printhead assembly (4).
    4. Turn the media guide adjustment knob until the media guide slides all the way out.
    5. Lead the labels under the dancer assembly (2), through the media sensor (3) and under the printhead assembly. Push them back until they touch the inside back wall of the media sensor.
    6. Turn the media guide adjustment knob until the guide lightly touches the edge of the labels.
    7. Leave the printhead open. With direct thermal labels, skip the ribbon step.

    Not sure which label type you have? Scratch the printable surface quickly with a fingernail. A black mark means direct thermal, which needs no ribbon.

    Load the ribbon

    The standard ZT610 and ZT620 use ribbon coated on the outside (ink side out); inside-coated ribbon needs the optional ink-side-in spindle. To test a roll, press the sticky side of a label onto the outside of the ribbon and pull it off. Ink on the label means the outside is coated. Use ribbon wider than the labels to protect the printhead.

    1. Slide the ribbon roll onto the ribbon supply spindle (5) so the loose end unrolls the way the diagram inside the printer shows. Push the roll back as far as it goes.
    2. Lead the ribbon under the printhead assembly and around its left side.
    3. Pull the ribbon as far back under the printhead as it goes, wrap it around the ribbon take-up spindle (6) and turn the spindle a few times in the direction shown, so the ribbon is tight and straight. No empty core is needed.

    Switch on and run the Print wizard

    1. Turn the printhead-open lever down until the printhead locks, and close the media door.
    2. Connect the power cord and switch the printer on (I). Don't connect it to the computer yet.
    3. On the Home screen, touch Wizards › Print › Start Print.
    4. Answer the questions: print type (Thermal Transfer or Direct Thermal), label type (Continuous, Gap/Notch or Mark), label width and collection method (Tear Off).
    5. When the wizard asks, position the labels so a label lies over the green light of the media sensor, and touch the check mark. Close the printhead when prompted and touch the next check mark. The printer calibrates.
    6. Print the test label. If the gap between labels does not stop over the tear bar, change Tear Line Offset: lower values move the labels into the printer, higher values move them out.
    7. If text or barcodes are too light or too dark, touch Print Quality Assistance, print several test labels and select the best one. The printer sets darkness and speed to match.
    Tip

    Don't send print jobs while a wizard is running. You can change single settings later: Print › Print Quality (Darkness, Print Speed, Print Type, Label Type) and Print › Image Adjust (Media Handling, Tear Line Offset).     Install the driver, then connect

    Install the Windows driver before you connect the cable. If Windows finds the printer first, it can show up as an unknown device with the wrong driver. Zebra recommends Windows Printer Driver v10 (ZDesigner), available in the Drivers section of the ZT610 support page and the ZT620 support page. Run the installer with administrator rights and choose the port, the model and the resolution.

    The part number on the printer shows the resolution: the last digit before the dash is 2 for 203 dpi, 3 for 300 dpi and 6 for 600 dpi. Our ZT61042-… is a 203 dpi ZT610 and our ZT62063-… a 300 dpi ZT620. Every installer screen is shown in our ZDesigner driver guide; it uses the ZT411 as the example, and the steps are the same.

    USB

    Connect the USB cable to the printer and the PC, then switch the printer on. Windows finishes the driver installation while the printer starts up.

    Ethernet

    Connect the network cable to the built-in Gigabit Ethernet port and restart the printer. It requests an IP address from your network. Find the address under Connection › Wired › Wired IP Address or on the network configuration label. For a fixed address, set Connection › Wired › Wired IP Protocol to PERMANENT, enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway, then touch Connection › Networks › Reset Network.

    Wi-Fi (optional)

    Wi-Fi needs an optional wireless card (802.11ac or Wi-Fi 6). Connect by USB or Ethernet first, then run Wizards › Connection or set the ESSID and security under Connection › WLAN, and reset the network. On printers placed on the EU market from August 2025, set up Protected Mode first.

    Print a configuration label

    • Printer settings: when the printer is ready (STATUS light steady green), hold FEED + CANCEL for 2 seconds, or touch System › Settings › Print: System Settings.
    • Network settings: Connection › Networks › Print: Network Info prints the IP address and network details.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does the Zebra ZT610 come with labels, ribbon or cables?

    No. Labels, ribbon and communication cables are not included, so order them together with the printer.

    Which side of the ribbon faces out on the ZT610 and ZT620?

    The coated (ink) side faces out on the standard printer. Inside-coated ribbon needs the optional ink-side-in ribbon supply spindle.

    Do I need an empty core on the ribbon take-up spindle?

    No. The ribbon wraps directly around the take-up spindle. To remove used ribbon, cut it before the spindle, turn the ribbon release knob and slide the roll off.

    Why does the printer say Ribbon Out with direct thermal labels?

    It is still set to thermal transfer. Set Print › Print Quality › Print Type to Direct Thermal, and choose the same in your driver.

    How do I find the IP address of my ZT610 or ZT620?

    Open Connection › Wired › Wired IP Address on the touch display, or print the network configuration label from Connection › Networks › Print: Network Info.
