Zebra thermal transfer printer without ribbon: set direct thermal

Check your labels with a scratch test, then set Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer in the ZDesigner driver and on the printer, so jobs stop printing blank or switching back.

    Most Zebra thermal transfer printers can print with or without ribbon, but only when the print method matches your labels. When it doesn't, you get blank labels or a ribbon alert. This applies to the ZD421t, ZD220t, ZD230t, ZD621t, ZD611t, ZT231, ZT411, ZT421 and ZT610/ZT620.

    Which print method do you need?

    The labels decide. Thermal transfer labels need a ribbon: heat transfers ink from the ribbon onto the label. Direct thermal labels have a heat-sensitive coating that darkens under the printhead, so they need no ribbon.

    Check which labels you have

    Use Zebra's scratch test: scratch the print side of a label firmly and quickly with a fingernail or a pen cap. Friction heat darkens a direct thermal coating.

    • A black mark appears: direct thermal. Print without ribbon.
    • No mark: thermal transfer. You need a ribbon.

    Remove or load the ribbon

    To direct thermal: open the printer and take the ribbon off both spindles.

    Back to thermal transfer: load the ribbon as shown in the setup guide for your ZD421, ZD220/ZD230, ZD621, ZT231, ZT411 or ZT610/ZT620. Use ribbon wider than your labels, in the width, length and core size your printer takes. On ZD desktop models, press FEED after loading to advance at least 20 cm; this removes slack and wrinkles. Standard ZT printers take ribbon coated on the outside.

    Set the print method in the driver

    If you print from Windows, change the driver first. Zebra notes that the driver and label software override the printer's own settings.

    1. Open Settings › Bluetooth & devices › Printers & scanners, choose your ZDesigner printer and open Printing preferences.
    2. Under Print Options, set Printing mode to Thermal Direct for labels without ribbon, or Thermal Transfer with ribbon.
    3. Click Apply and OK.
    4. If your label software has its own print method setting, change it there too.

    "Thermal Direct" in the driver is "Direct Thermal" on the printer. No driver yet? See Install the ZDesigner driver on Windows 11.

    Set the print method on the printer

    The printer stores its own print method. Set it to match, especially if your software sends ZPL without the ZDesigner driver.

    ZD421, ZD220, ZD230, ZD621 without display No menu. Use Zebra Setup Utilities, the Printer Setup Utility app or a ZPL command (below).

    Zebra Setup Utilities (Windows)

    1. Select your printer and click Configure Printer Settings.
    2. Click Next twice to reach the Media window.
    3. Set Print Mode to Direct Thermal (not using ribbon) or Thermal Transfer (using ribbon).
    4. Continue to the last screen and click Finish to send the settings to the printer.

    In Zebra's app for Android, tap Settings › Media, set Transfer Type and tap Apply.

    ZPL command

    ^MTD sets direct thermal and ^MTT sets thermal transfer. ^JUS saves the current settings, so they survive a restart. Save this line in Notepad and send the file with Zebra Setup Utilities:

    To check the result, print a configuration report and look at PRINT METHOD: DIRECT-THERMAL or THERMAL-TRANS. On a ZD421, ZD611, ZD621 or ZT model, hold FEED + CANCEL for 2 seconds while the printer is ready; ZT models also offer System › Settings › Print: System Settings. On a ZD220 or ZD230, hold FEED until the STATUS light flashes once, then release.

    Which setting wins

    Zebra's support article Printer Settings Change When I Print a Label explains it: software always overrides the printer settings. The driver or label software can send ZPL commands with each label that change the printer's settings, including whether it uses ribbon. ZPL settings stay in effect until a later command changes them. So if the driver or a label template still says Thermal Transfer, the next job can switch the printer back. Set the same method in the driver, the label software and the printer.

    Calibrate and print a test label

    Zebra recommends calibrating when you switch to a different type of ribbon or media, or when ribbon isn't detected correctly. Follow the guide for your model: ZD421, ZD220/ZD230, ZD621, ZT231 or ZT610/ZT620. Then print one label from your normal software and scan the barcodes.

    Adjust darkness and speed

    Check print quality after the switch. Zebra's advice: use the lowest darkness that prints well; slower speeds usually print better. Too much darkness blurs barcodes, can burn through the ribbon and wears the printhead. Stay within your labels' maximum speed.     Common problems

    Labels feed but come out blank Thermal transfer labels without ribbon, or labels loaded upside down Scratch test. No mark: load ribbon, set Thermal Transfer.
    "Ribbon Out" with direct thermal labels (ZT models) Printer or driver still set to Thermal Transfer Set Direct Thermal in the driver and printer.
    "Ribbon In" (ZT models: SUPPLIES light flashing yellow) Ribbon loaded in Direct Thermal mode Remove the ribbon, or set Thermal Transfer for thermal transfer labels. Message stays without ribbon? Calibrate.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I use a thermal transfer printer without ribbon?

    Yes, with direct thermal labels: remove the ribbon and set Direct Thermal in the driver and on the printer. Thermal transfer labels always need ribbon.

    Why does my Zebra print blank labels?

    Usually thermal transfer labels are printing without ribbon. Scratch a label: no black mark means you need ribbon and Thermal Transfer.

    How do I switch my Zebra to direct thermal?

    Remove the ribbon, set Printing mode to Thermal Direct in the driver and Direct Thermal on the printer, then calibrate.

    Why does my Zebra keep switching back to thermal transfer?

    The driver or label software still says Thermal Transfer, and software settings override the printer. Change it there too.
