How to update the Zebra ZT411 firmware

ZT411 firmware comes from Zebra as a Printer OS file. Check your current version, download the latest file and send it to the printer from a PC, a USB flash drive or a phone.

You'll need
  • A ZT411 with labels loaded (the USB drive method prints a configuration label at the end)
  • The current firmware file from Zebra's ZT411 support page
  • One of these: a Windows PC with ZDownloader and a USB cable, a USB flash drive, or a phone with the Zebra Nucleus Connector app

Before you start

A ZT411 that runs firmware v6.7 (V92.21.17Z) or later cannot go back to an earlier version. If you send an older file, the printer rejects it and keeps its current firmware. Only install a version you want to keep.

Important

ZT411 printers bought in the EMEA region after 1 August 2025 have USB mirroring switched off by default, which stops the USB flash drive method in step 3. Wi-Fi is also off by default on these printers, and you set a Protected Mode password and a front-panel password before wired or wireless network setup. See our ZT411 Wi-Fi guide.

Check the current firmware version

On the home screen, touch the Printer Info tab and note the Link-OS version. Zebra's ZT411 guide asks for Link-OS 7.0 or later. Write the version down so you can confirm the update afterwards.

Download the firmware from Zebra

  1. Open the ZT411 Support & Downloads page (short link: zebra.com/zt411-info) and go to the Downloads tab.
  2. Select Printer OS v92.
  3. Download the .zip file and accept the licence agreement.
  4. Extract the firmware file. Its name follows the pattern V92.xx.xxx.zpl.

Zebra's Link-OS 7.4 release notes of July 2025 list V92.21.39Z as the current build, and newer releases may have followed. Always use the file from Zebra's page rather than a version number you found elsewhere.

Send the firmware to the printer

Pick one of the methods below. ZDownloader is the method named in Zebra's ZT411 guide.

ZDownloader (Windows PC)

  1. Install ZDownloader from Zebra and run it as administrator.
  2. Connect the printer by USB. On the Printer tab, click Auto-Detect and select the printer.
  3. On the File tab, click Select Firmware File and choose the .zpl file.
  4. Right-click the printer and choose Download To Selected.
  5. Wait. After the transfer, the printer can keep verifying and decompressing the file with nothing visible happening.

ZDownloader can also send the file over RS-232 serial or parallel.

USB flash drive

  1. On the drive, create the folders Zebra/appl, Zebra/commands and Zebra/files.
  2. Copy the firmware file into Zebra/appl.
  3. Insert the drive into one of the printer's USB host ports.
  4. If the firmware on the drive differs from the printer's, the printer downloads it, restarts and prints a configuration label.
  5. When the display shows MIRROR PROCESSING FINISHED, remove the drive.
Note

On EMEA printers bought after 1 August 2025, turn USB mirroring on first. Send this command to the printer from a computer: ! U1 setvar "usb.mirror.enable" "on"

Zebra Setup Utilities

In Zebra Setup Utilities, select the printer and open Printer Tools, then the Action tab, and choose Send file with the firmware file. Zebra documents this route for its desktop printers, not in the ZT411 guide. If it does not work on your printer, use ZDownloader.

Zebra Nucleus Connector app

Zebra's guide for this mobile app, formerly called Zebra Printer Setup Utility, lists the ZT400 series as supported, with Link-OS 5.2 or later. Open Files, select the firmware file and tap Send to Printer. You may need to reconnect to the printer afterwards. Over Bluetooth LE the app sends files of up to 1 MB only, so a firmware file cannot go that way.

Let the printer install and restart

The printer installs the firmware and reboots on its own. Leave it switched on and do not send print jobs until it is ready again.

Tip

If you ever need to restart the printer, let it finish booting first. After switching it off, wait 30 seconds before you switch it on again.

Confirm the new version

Open the Printer Info tab again and compare the Link-OS version with the one you noted. If it has not changed, check these points:

  • The file is older than the installed version. The printer rejects downgrades.
  • With the USB drive, the file is the same version as the printer's, so nothing was downloaded.
  • On an EMEA printer bought after 1 August 2025, USB mirroring is still off.
  • The file is not in the Zebra/appl folder.

After the update, print a test label to check your output. If labels skip, see ZT411 skipping labels.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check the firmware version on a Zebra ZT411?

Touch the Printer Info tab on the home screen. It shows the Link-OS version the printer is running.

Where do I download ZT411 firmware?

On Zebra's ZT411 Support & Downloads page (zebra.com/zt411-info), under Downloads, select Printer OS v92. Extract the .zpl file from the .zip before sending it.

Can I downgrade the ZT411 firmware?

Not from v6.7 (V92.21.17Z) or later. The printer rejects the older file and keeps its current version.

Why does nothing happen when I insert the USB drive?

Check that the file is in Zebra/appl and that it differs from the installed version. On EMEA printers bought after 1 August 2025, USB mirroring is off by default and must be turned on first.

Can I update the firmware from my phone?

Yes, with the Zebra Nucleus Connector app and its Files feature. Not over Bluetooth LE, though, because files are limited to 1 MB there.
