TSC MH241T and MH341T setup guide: ribbon, labels, network

Load the ribbon and labels, calibrate on the touch display, install the TSC Windows driver and connect by USB or Ethernet, with the EU PRTSecure step.

    This guide takes a new TSC MH241T or MH341T from the box to the first printed label. Both are 4-inch industrial printers with a colour touch display, and they set up the same way: the MH241T prints at 203 dpi, the MH341T at 300 dpi. They print with a ribbon (thermal transfer) or without one on direct thermal labels.

    You'll need
    • Labels 20–114 mm wide on a 38.1 mm (1.5 in) or 76.2 mm (3 in) core, up to 203 mm in diameter
    • For thermal transfer labels: a ribbon on a 25.4 mm (1 in) core, up to 600 m long
    • A Windows PC and the USB cable from the box
    • A network cable if the printer will run on Ethernet

    Before you start

    Check the box

    The box holds the printer, a quick installation guide, a power cord and a USB cable. The power supply is built in. Labels and ribbons are not included. Keep the packaging in case you need to ship the printer.

    Know the controls

    On the front you find the touch display, six buttons (menu, select, up, down, left/pause and right/feed), one status light and two USB host ports for a scanner or keyboard. At the back are the power switch, the power socket, USB, Ethernet, RS-232 serial and a microSD card slot. Inside, under the media cover, are the ribbon spindles, the label supply spindle, the print head release lever and two knobs for print head pressure.

    You can tap the display or use the buttons. Tap the Menu icon on the main screen to open the menu. Commands sent by your label software or driver override the settings you make on the display.

    Place the printer and connect the cable

    1. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface with room to open the media cover.
    2. Make sure the power switch at the back is off.
    3. Connect the USB cable to the printer and the PC.
    4. Plug the power cord into the printer, then into the wall outlet.

    TSC asks you to switch the printer off before you plug in the power cord. Don't switch it on yet: load the supplies first.

    Load the ribbon

    Skip this step if you print on direct thermal labels. Thermal transfer labels (for example polyester or durable paper labels) need a ribbon.

    1. Open the media cover.
    2. Release the print head with the print head release lever.
    3. Slide the ribbon roll onto the ribbon supply spindle.
    4. Lead the ribbon under the print head along the ribbon path, and attach its end to the ribbon rewind spindle.
    5. Turn the rewind spindle a few times until the ribbon is tight and has no wrinkles.

    The MH241T and MH341T take ribbons with the ink on the outside or the inside of the roll. The ribbon path differs between the two; section 3.2 of the TSC user manual shows both paths. The video shows the whole loading sequence.

    Load the labels

    1. Move the label roll guard to the end of the label supply spindle and fold it down.
    2. Slide the label roll onto the spindle, then put the label roll guard back against the roll so it is held in place. Labels on a 25.4 mm (1 in) core need the optional 1 in core spindle.
    3. With the print head still open, lead the labels through the damper, the media sensor and the front label guide to the front of the printer.
    4. Move the front label guide until it touches the edge of the labels.
    5. Check that the media sensor sits where the labels pass, so that it can see the gaps or black marks.
    6. Close the print head with the release lever and close the media cover.

    Fanfold labels and rolls from an external unwinder enter through the external label entrance chute at the back. Then thread them the same way as a roll.

    Tip

    The MH241T and MH341T have a movable media near-end sensor. It warns you before the roll runs out, so you can have a new roll ready.

    Switch on, set the language and calibrate

    Switch the printer on. When it is ready, the status light turns solid green and the main screen appears.

    1. To change the display language, open Menu › Advanced › Language.
    2. Open Menu › Sensor › Auto Calibration.
    3. Choose the sensor type that matches your labels: Gap for labels with gaps between them, Black Mark for media with black marks on the back, or Continuous for media without either.
    4. The printer feeds some labels and measures them.

    Calibrate again whenever you load a different label type. The main screen also has a media sensor calibration icon as a shortcut. If auto calibration fails, or the labels are longer than 254 mm, see the MH241/MH341 calibration guide.

    Print a configuration label

    Open Menu › Diagnostic › Print Config. The printer prints its current settings and a test pattern for the print head. Gaps in the pattern point to damaged print head dots. A clean configuration label tells you that the supplies are loaded correctly and the sensor is calibrated.

    Install the Windows driver

    TSC supplies a Windows driver made with Seagull Scientific. You can also print from label software that sends TSPL or ZPL commands: the printer language, TSPL-EZD, is compatible with EPL, ZPL, ZPL II and DPL.

    1. Download the Windows Driver from the Resources section of the MH Series product page. Check the supported Windows versions listed with the download.
    2. Unzip the file and run the driver wizard with the printer switched on and connected.
    3. Choose your model (MH241T or MH341T) and the port. For USB, select the USB port that the wizard finds.
    4. Finish the wizard and print a Windows test page.

    If the wizard doesn't find a USB printer, switch the printer off and on again. Windows may have detected the printer already, so check your list of printers before you add it a second time.

    Set the label size

    Open the printer's printing preferences and create a new stock with the exact width and height of your labels, then select it. TSC lists a wrong label size as a cause of paper jams and skipped labels. Its FAQ on adding a stock shows the dialog.

    Connect to the network

    Ethernet is standard. Wi-Fi comes as a slot-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module that your dealer can fit at the back, and Bluetooth alone as a factory option.

    Important

    To meet the EU Radio Equipment Directive, TSC ships printers in the EU with the network blocked: the PRTSecure security mode is set to Strict. Before the first network connection, open Menu › Advanced › PRTSecure on the display and select Standard. You can also do this over USB in TSC Console version V3.4.0.5 or later, under Functions › PRTSecure › Security Mode.

    Ethernet

    1. Connect the network cable to the Ethernet port at the back.
    2. Open Menu › Interface › Ethernet › Config. DHCP is the default. For a fixed address, switch DHCP off and enter the IP address, subnet mask and gateway.
    3. Check the address under Menu › Interface › Ethernet › Status, which also shows the MAC address.
    4. In the Windows driver, choose a network (TCP/IP) port with that IP address.

    Wi-Fi (with the Wi-Fi module)

    Open Menu › Interface › Wi-Fi. Enter the network name under SSID, choose the encryption under Security and enter the Password. Under Config, keep DHCP or enter a fixed address. The Wi-Fi icon on the main screen shows when the connection is ready.

    TSC Console

    TSC Console is TSC's free Windows tool for setup, monitoring and firmware updates over USB, serial, Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It also has TPH Care, which checks the print head for faulty dots. Download it from the TSC Console page. Details are in the TSC Console user manual.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does the TSC MH241T need a ribbon?

    Only for thermal transfer labels. The MH241T and MH341T also print on direct thermal labels without a ribbon.

    Why can't I connect the MH241T to the network?

    Printers for the EU ship with PRTSecure set to Strict, which blocks the network. Set Menu › Advanced › PRTSecure to Standard first.

    Can I lock the menu on the display?

    Yes. Menu › Advanced › Security can lock the menu or the Favorites with a password. The lock is off by default. If a locked printer's password is unknown, contact us.

    Can the MH241T replace a Zebra printer?

    Its printer language, TSPL-EZD, is compatible with ZPL and ZPL II, and the display has a ZPL2 settings section. Test your own label formats before you switch.

    Can I print 100 × 150 mm shipping labels?

    Yes. The maximum print width is 104 mm and labels up to 114 mm wide fit, so 100 × 150 mm (4 × 6 in) labels work on both models.
