Zebra DS3678 Part Number Decoder: Kit, Cradle or Neither
A warehouse manager orders two DS3678 scanners for a goods-in bench. One arrives at 349 euros as a bare scanner in a box. The other arrives at 526 euros with a charging cradle, a USB cable and a power supply. Both say DS3678-SR on the carton, and the only thing that distinguished them on the purchase order was a block of characters nobody read. A Zebra DS3678 part number is not decoration: it tells you the scan engine, whether the cradle is in the box, and whether the unit will survive your freezer aisle.
This guide decodes the DS3608 and DS3678 ultra-rugged codes against real stock lines, with the prices we actually list. If you have already read our barcode scanners range and found yourself staring at nine near-identical DS3608 listings, this is the article that sorts them out.
Which DS3600 part number should you order?
| Your situation | Order this part number |
|---|---|
| Corded scanner at a goods-in bench, first install, nothing on the desk yet | DS3608-SR3U4600VZW, 233.68 euros, USB cable in the box |
| Replacing a dead corded unit, cable already routed through the bench | DS3608-SR00003VZWW, 218.66 euros, scanner only |
| Cordless scanner that lives on a cradle at a packing station | DS3678-SR3U42A0SFW, 526.91 euros, cradle, cable and power supply |
| Cordless scanner paired straight to a tablet or vehicle terminal, no cradle wanted | DS3678-SR0F003VZWW, 349.72 euros, scanner only |
| Small, dense codes: component reels, pharmaceutical packs, laboratory vials | DS3608-HD20003VZWW, 307.18 euros, high density optics |
| Pallet labels read from a forklift, 3 to 10 metres away | DS3678-XR3U42A2SVW, 752.38 euros, extended range plus cradle |
How do you read a Zebra DS3678 part number?
Zebra does not publish a public character-by-character key for the 3600 family, so the reading below is built from the stock lines themselves: twenty-odd real SKUs cross-checked against what each one ships with. It holds consistently, and it is enough to stop the two mistakes that cost money.
Take DS3678-SR3U42A0SFW apart in four steps.
| Segment | In this example | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Model | DS3678 | DS3608 is corded, DS3678 is cordless Bluetooth. Same housing, same optics. |
| Engine | SR | SR, HD, HP or XR. Cannot be changed later by any setting. |
| Kit digit | 3 | A 3 here means a configured kit. A 0, 2 or 6 means a bare scanner. |
| Interface block | U42 | U means a USB kit. The 42 block appears on cordless cradle kits, 46 on corded cable kits. |
The kit digit is the one worth memorising. Across every DS3600 line we stock, the pattern is clean:
| Part number | Kit digit | In the box |
|---|---|---|
| DS3608-SR00003VZWW | 0 | Scanner only, no cable |
| DS3608-SR3U4600VZW | 3 | Scanner plus USB cable |
| DS3608-HD20003VZWW | 2 | Scanner only, no cable |
| DS3678-SR0F003VZWW | 0 | Scanner only, no cradle |
| DS3678-HP2F003VZWW | 2 | Scanner only, no cradle |
| DS3678-SR3U42A0SFW | 3 | Scanner, cradle, USB cable, power supply |
| DS3678-XR3U42A2SVW | 3 | Scanner, cradle, USB cable, power supply |
Two further details. The F003 block that appears on cordless codes such as SR0F003VZWW and HP2F003VZWW marks the scanner-only pack, so if you see F003 there is no cradle coming. And the trailing letters, VZWW, SFW, SVW or ZVW, cover region and packaging rather than specification. They do not change what the scanner does, but they are a different stock line, so quote the whole code on the order.
What do SR, HD, HP and XR actually change?
The engine code is the only part of the number you cannot fix afterwards. Order the wrong one and the scanner works, just not at the distance or on the symbol you needed.
| Engine | Built for | Corded DS3608 price | Honest advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| SR, standard range | Cartons, shelf labels, goods-in, general warehouse work | 218.66 euros | Correct for roughly four jobs in five. Start here. |
| HD, high density | Small, dense 1D and 2D codes close up | 307.18 euros | Shorter working distance. Worse on a normal pallet label, not better. |
| HP, high performance | Long distances plus OCR and image capture | Cordless from 427.01 euros | Only if you genuinely need text capture or photos from the scanner. |
| XR, sold as ER | Near contact out to high-rack and forklift distances | 410.65 euros | The right answer for racking. Note the sealing difference below. |
One trap sits inside the ER line. Our SR and HD and HP stock lines are rated IP67. The XR and ER lines, DS3678-XR6F003VZWW and DS3678-XR3U42A2SVW included, are rated IP65. That is still a sealed industrial scanner, but it is spray-resistant rather than immersion-resistant. If a scanner in your operation gets dropped into standing water or hosed down, pay attention to that line before you pay the extended-range premium.
The 191.99 euro gap between an SR and an XR corded unit buys reach, nothing else. A yard crew reading pallet labels from a forklift seat needs it. A packing bench 400 mm from the carton does not, and the SR will be faster on close work.
Is the kit code cheaper than buying the cradle separately?
Yes, and by enough to matter on a rollout. Here is the arithmetic on our own list prices.
| Route | Parts | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Kit code | DS3678-SR3U42A0SFW | 526.91 euros |
| Separately | DS3678-SR0F003VZWW at 349.72 plus STB3678-C100F3WW cradle at 225.07 | 574.79 euros |
The kit saves 47.88 euros per station, so on twelve packing stations that is roughly the price of a spare cradle and two batteries. The same holds on the corded side, where the cable-included code costs 15.02 euros more than the bare scanner while the CBA-U42-S07PAR cable on its own is 38.41 euros.
The reverse is also true, and this is where money gets wasted. If your cordless scanners pair directly to tablets or vehicle terminals and charge from a wall socket, the cradle is 177 euros of hardware per unit sitting in a cupboard. Order the F003 code and buy a BTRY-36IAB0E-00 spare battery at 72.01 euros instead. Twenty units configured that way is the difference between a 10 538 euro order and a 6 994 euro one.
Which code survives a cold store?
This is the question that catches Baltic, Finnish, Polish and Czech buyers specifically, because frozen and chilled storage is a large share of the regional warehouse estate. The corded and cordless units do not have the same rating.
| Unit | Operating temperature | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| DS3608, corded | Minus 30 to plus 50 degrees Celsius | Frozen storage, including minus 25 degree chambers |
| DS3678, cordless | Minus 20 to plus 50 degrees Celsius | Chilled storage and loading bays, not deep freeze |
If the work happens inside a minus 25 degree chamber, the corded DS3608 is the specification that actually covers it, and the cable has to match: an ordinary PVC cable goes stiff and cracks, which is why freezer-rated cables such as the CBA-UF6-C09ZAR exist at 76.83 euros against 38.41 for the standard one. Where a cordless unit moves repeatedly between a freezer and a warm aisle, the sealed FLB3678-C100F3WW cradle at 277.01 euros handles the condensation that kills ordinary cradles. All of these sit in barcode scanner accessories.
Common questions
Does the part number tell me which interfaces the scanner supports?
No. Every DS3608 and DS3678 we list supports USB, RS-232 and keyboard wedge in the same unit, switched by scanning a configuration barcode. The U in the code tells you which cable arrived, not what the scanner can do.
Can I buy a cradle later for an F003 scanner?
Yes. The STB3678-C100F3WW is the standard cradle and the FLB3678-C100F3WW is the sealed version. Both pair with any DS3678. Buying later costs about 48 euros more per unit than the kit code, so decide before you order if you can.
Why is the ER version rated IP65 when the SR is IP67?
The extended-range optics need a different window assembly. It is a genuine trade-off rather than a cost saving, and it is the one specification difference buyers consistently miss when they step up for reach.
What is the difference between HP and XR if both read at distance?
XR is built purely for range on barcodes. HP adds OCR and image capture, so it is the choice when the scanner also has to read printed text or photograph damage on inbound pallets. If you only need reach, XR is the cheaper and better-sealed option.
Do I need the four-slot battery charger?
Only on shift work. The SAC3600-4001CR holds four batteries at 283.24 euros, which pays off where scanners run across two or three shifts and cannot sit on a cradle. Single-shift operations charge in the cradle and skip it.
How do I stop a supplier shipping the wrong variant?
Put the full manufacturer part number on the purchase order, not DS3678-SR, and ask them to confirm the box contents in writing. Cross-check against the manufacturer specification, for example the Zebra DS36x8-SR spec sheet. A quote that names only the model is a quote nobody checked.
Order against the code, not the model name
Three characters decide whether a 225 euro cradle is in the carton, and one pair of letters decides whether the scanner reaches your top rack. Read the engine code first, then the kit digit, then confirm the listed box contents on the product page before you commit. Compare the full cordless range in cordless and wireless barcode scanners, and if your decode says the cradle, cable or spare battery is missing, the matching parts are in barcode scanner accessories. For a rollout of more than five units, order one against the exact code, configure it, then order the rest against the same string.
