Card Printer Ribbons: Which YMCKO Fits Your Printer
A plastic card printer is the easy part. The consumables are where the money leaks. Someone orders "a colour ribbon" from a search result, and it either does not physically fit the cartridge or it prints 100 cards when the budget assumed 300. Ribbon part numbers for Zebra ZC and Evolis printers look nearly identical, differ by a single digit, and are not interchangeable between families.
This guide matches each printer family to the right card printer ribbon, the right blank card and the right cleaning kit, using the part numbers we hold in stock and the real cost per card that follows from them.
Which card printer ribbon should you order today?

What do the letters on a card printer ribbon actually mean?
Every colour card ribbon is a sequence of panels that pass over the same card in turn. The letters name those panels in order:
- Y, M, C are yellow, magenta and cyan. These three build the full-colour image.
- K is a resin black panel. It prints sharp black text and barcodes that a scanner can read. Black built from Y, M and C looks muddy and scans badly, which is why K exists separately.
- O is a clear overlay. It is the protective varnish that stops the print rubbing off in a pocket or a card reader.
- F is a UV fluorescent panel, used for a security mark that only shows under UV light.
- I and H appear on retransfer ribbons for contact-chip and contactless cards.
So YMCKO is a five-panel ribbon that prints one side in colour with protection. YMCKOK adds a second black panel for the reverse, which is what makes it the correct choice for a dual-sided printer. A monochrome ribbon is a single continuous black, white or coloured resin layer with no panels at all, which is why it prints many more cards per roll.
The consequence that catches people out: a 300-print YMCKO roll is 300 card-sized sets of panels, and once a set is used it is gone even if the card jammed halfway through.
Which Zebra ZC100 and ZC300 ribbon do you need?
Zebra ZC ribbons arrive as sealed cartridges with a chip. The printer reads the chip, so a ribbon intended for a different family will be rejected even if it fits the slot. The useful figure is not the ribbon price, it is the cost per card.
| Part number | Type | Images per roll | Price | Ribbon cost per card |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 800300-250EM | YMCKO colour, one side | 200 | 54.65 EUR | 0.27 EUR |
| 800300-255EM | YMCKO colour, one side | 300 | 78.19 EUR | 0.26 EUR |
| 800300-360EM | YMCKOK, colour front and black back | 200 | 74.44 EUR | 0.37 EUR |
| 800300-370EM | Half-panel YMCKO | 400 | 62.19 EUR | 0.16 EUR |
| 800300-301 | Monochrome black | 2000 | 27.32 EUR | 0.014 EUR |
| 800300-309EM | Monochrome white | Varies by card | 47.12 EUR | n/a |
Two honest observations. First, the gap between colour and monochrome is a factor of roughly twenty, so any card that does not genuinely need a photograph should be printed on mono. A visitor pass with a name, a date and a barcode costs under two cents in ribbon on 800300-301 and about twenty-seven cents on a YMCKO. Over a year of visitor badges that is the price of another printer.
Second, the half-panel 800300-370EM is the most overlooked part number in the range. The colour panels are shortened to cover only the photograph area and the rest of the card is printed in black. If your design is a head-and-shoulders photo on the left with text on the right, which describes most staff badges, it halves your ribbon cost with no visible difference.
Prices above are our current catalogue prices and move with supply, but the ratios between them hold.
Which Evolis ribbon fits Primacy 2, Badgy200 and Edikio?
Evolis splits its range by printer family rather than by panel count, and the families do not share consumables at all. A Badgy200 ribbon will not load in a Primacy 2, and an Edikio ribbon is a different product again even though all three print CR-80 cards.
| Printer | Ribbon part number | Type and yield | Price | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primacy 2 | R5F208E100 | YMCKO, 300 prints | 82.22 EUR | The default colour badge ribbon, 0.27 EUR per card |
| Primacy 2 | R5F202E100 | YMCKO, 200 prints | 62.37 EUR | Smaller roll, 0.31 EUR per card |
| Primacy 2 | R6F203E100 | YMCKO-K, 200 prints | 78.40 EUR | Colour front, black reverse, 0.39 EUR per card |
| Primacy 2 | RCT223NAAA | Monochrome black | 24.57 EUR | Text, numbers and barcodes only |
| Badgy200 | CBGR0100C | YMCKO, 100 prints | 44.28 EUR | Occasional colour cards, 0.44 EUR per card |
| Badgy200 | CBGR0500F | Monochrome black, Blackflex | 17.28 EUR | Plain text cards on a Badgy |
| Edikio Access | RCT025NAA | Monochrome black | 18.62 EUR | Black text on white price tags |
| Edikio Access | RCT052NAA | Monochrome white | 22.68 EUR | White text on black price tags |
| Avansia | RT4F010EAA | YMCK retransfer | 172.48 EUR | Printing over contact chips and antennas |
The Badgy200 line deserves a note, because the cost per card is the highest in the table at 0.44 EUR. That is not a fault, it is the trade. A Badgy200 costs a fraction of a Primacy 2, and if you print 50 membership cards a year the printer saving dwarfs the ribbon difference. The crossover is somewhere around 400 to 600 cards a year. Above that, a Primacy 2 pays for itself in ribbon and in time, because a Badgy200 is not built to be fed all afternoon.
Retransfer printing on the Avansia is a different process. The image goes onto a clear film which is then laminated onto the card under heat, so it prints over the ridges of a contact chip and over a contactless antenna without banding. If your cards have chips, retransfer is the only honest answer. If they do not, you are paying for capability you will never use.
Which blank cards should go in the same order?
The ribbon is half the match. The card is the other half, and the wrong card produces faults that look like printer faults.
The standard is CR-80: 85.6 by 54 mm, 0.76 mm thick, usually written as 30 mil or 760 micron. Our Zebra Premier PVC cards (104523-111) are exactly that, white, in boxes of 500 at 54.92 EUR, which is 0.11 EUR per card. For a mono visitor badge the card is now the expensive half of the consumable, not the ribbon.
Four rules that prevent most bad prints:
- Thickness matters more than brand. Card printers feed by thickness. A 0.50 mm card in a feeder set for 0.76 mm will double-feed, and the printer reports a jam it did not cause.
- Graphic-grade surface, not just PVC. Cheap cards from a marketplace often have a surface that the dye will not sit on evenly. The symptom is patchy colour that moves around the card, which people mistake for a worn printhead.
- Composite cards for laminated or long-life cards. PVC composite tolerates the heat of a lamination module without bowing. Pure PVC does not.
- Magnetic stripe coercivity has to match the encoder. HiCo cards in a LoCo encoder write data that fades within weeks, and the card passes its first test.
For the Edikio price-tag printers the card choice is the product. Edikio prints white or coloured text onto pre-coloured cards, typically black, so the colour comes from the card and the ribbon is monochrome. That is why an Edikio consumable order is a box of black cards and a white ribbon rather than anything resembling a photo badge.
Why does a cleaning kit belong in every consumable order?
Card printers pull cards through a path lined with transport rollers, and those rollers pick up dust, PVC swarf and hand grease from every card. A dirty roller is the single most common cause of a card that prints with a repeating speckle or that stops halfway.
The maintenance rhythm is tied to the ribbon, not to the calendar: run a cleaning card every time you change a ribbon. On a 300-print YMCKO that means roughly once every 300 cards, which is what the manufacturers specify anyway. Our Evolis cleaning kits run from 10.53 EUR for the basic cards up to 37.26 EUR for the advanced kit with pens and swabs, so the cost of doing it properly is about three to twelve cents per card. A replacement printhead is several hundred euros.
The one thing not to do is clean a printhead with anything other than isopropanol on the correct swab. A paper towel scratches the head, and a scratched head prints a permanent white line down every card from then on.
What goes wrong when ribbon and card do not match?
| Symptom | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Printer rejects a new ribbon as invalid | Ribbon from a different printer family, or a non-genuine cartridge | Check the part number against your printer family before opening the box |
| Black text looks grey and will not scan | Design is printing black from the colour panels instead of the K panel | Set the black elements to true black in the card design software so the K panel is used |
| Print rubs off within days | Overlay panel disabled, or a ribbon without an O panel | Enable the overlay, or move to a YMCKO ribbon |
| Patchy colour that shifts position on the card | Non graphic-grade card surface | Change to graphic-grade PVC and retest with the same ribbon |
| Repeating speckle every few centimetres | Contaminated transport roller | Run a cleaning card, then a second one |
Common questions
Can I use a Zebra ribbon in an Evolis printer, or the reverse?
No. The cartridges are different shapes, the chips are different, and there is no adapter. Match the ribbon to the printer family every time.
Are compatible or refilled ribbons worth it?
On a ZC printer the chip usually blocks them outright. Where they do load, the typical cost is a shorter yield, inconsistent colour and a warranty argument if the printhead fails. For a printer you rely on, genuine is the cheaper option once a service call is priced in.
How many cards will a ribbon really print?
Expect 90 to 95 per cent of the stated figure in normal use. Jams, test prints and reprints each consume a panel set. If you are getting much less, the card or the feed is the problem rather than the ribbon.
Do I need a dual-sided printer, or can I print both sides manually?
You can flip a card and print it again, and for twenty cards a year that is sensible. Beyond that the alignment errors and the wasted panel sets cost more than the dual-sided model, and a YMCKOK ribbon does in one pass what two manual passes do badly.
What about printing on contactless or chip cards?
A direct-to-card printer can print around a chip but not over it, so leave the chip area clear in the design. If the design has to cover the whole card, you need a retransfer printer such as the Avansia.
Ordering the set rather than the part
The pattern behind all of the above is simple: a card printer order is never one item. It is a ribbon matched to the printer family, a card matched to the ribbon and the encoder, and a cleaning card matched to the ribbon change interval. Order those three together and the printer behaves. Order the ribbon alone and you will be ordering again next week.
You can compare printers in our plastic card printers range, see the full ID and card technology category, and find ribbons, blank cards, cleaning kits and encoders together in card technology accessories. If you tell us the printer model and roughly how many cards a year you print, we will send back the three part numbers rather than a catalogue.
