TSC TE200 and TE210 troubleshooting: lights, errors and fixes

What the LED tells you, and how to fix ribbon errors, skipped or blank labels, ribbon wrinkles, faded print, no printing and factory resets.

    The TE200 and TE210 have no display: one LED shows the printer's state, and TSC Console shows a status message on your PC. Find what you see below and open the matching fix.

    Fixes

    1. LED blinks red: labels out or jammed"Out of Paper" or "Paper Jam" in TSC Console

    CauseThe roll is empty or loaded incorrectly, a label is stuck, the sensor is not calibrated, or the label size is set wrongly.

    Fix

    1. Open the print head mechanism. Load a new roll if needed, remove any stuck label, and check that the labels run through the media sensor, printable side up, over the platen roller.
    2. Close the print head mechanism with both hands until both latches engage, and press FEED.
    3. If the LED blinks red again, calibrate the sensor and check the label size (Fix 7).
    2. LED blinks red: ribbon error"Ribbon End Err." or "Ribbon Encoder Err." in TSC Console

    CauseThe ribbon has run out, or it is not loaded correctly.

    Fix

    1. Open the print head mechanism. If the ribbon is used up, load a new roll.
    2. Check that the ribbon runs from the supply spindle past the print head to the rewind spindle, with both spindles fully in their hubs.
    3. Turn the rewind hub until the ribbon is tight, then close the mechanism (full steps in the setup guide).
    3. LED is solid red"Head Open" in TSC Console, or cutter error

    CauseThe print head mechanism is open, or the optional cutter (TE210) reports an error.

    Fix

    1. Close the print head mechanism with both hands, pressing until both latches engage.
    2. On a TE210 with a cutter, switch the printer off and check the cutter for jammed labels.
    4. LED stays offNo power

    CauseThe power cord or power supply is not connected, or the printer is switched off.

    Fix

    1. Check the power cord at the wall outlet and the power supply at the printer's power jack.
    2. Switch the printer on with the power switch at the back.
    5. Nothing printsLED green, but no label comes out

    CauseThe printer is paused, or the job doesn't reach it: loose cable, wrong driver port, or wrong network settings.

    Fix

    1. If the LED blinks green and nothing happens, the printer is paused. Press FEED once to resume.
    2. Reconnect the cable at both ends and select the port the printer uses (USB, COM or network) in the Windows driver.
    3. RS-232 on the TE210: use a pin-to-pin cable and the same serial settings on the PC and the printer.
    4. Network on the TE210: check the IP address in TSC Console. EU printers ship with the network blocked; set Functions › PRTSecure › Security Mode to Standard over USB.
    6. Labels come out blankLabels feed but stay white

    CauseThermal transfer labels are used without a ribbon, the ribbon is loaded the wrong way round, or the labels are upside down.

    Fix

    1. Scratch a label quickly with a fingernail. No dark mark means the labels need a ribbon. Load labels printable side up.
    2. Check the ribbon path: the ribbon is wound ink side out, and the inked side must face the labels.
    7. Labels skip or print in the wrong placeBlank labels in between, print across the gap or cut off at the side

    CauseThe label size is not set correctly, the sensor is not calibrated for these labels, or the sensor is dusty.

    Fix

    1. Set the label size exactly as the loaded labels in the driver (Printing preferences › Page Setup › Stock) and in your label software.
    2. Calibrate: switch off, hold FEED, switch on and release FEED while the LED blinks red.
    3. For black-mark labels, line up the black-mark sensor with the marks. Clean the sensor with a soft, non-metallic brush or a vacuum, not canned air.
    4. If labels stop correctly but the print is offset, set the vertical offset in the driver.

    8. Ribbon wrinklesDiagonal creases or blank streaks through the print

    CauseThe ribbon or the labels are loaded unevenly, the labels don't feed straight, or the print density is not suitable.

    Fix

    1. Reload the ribbon so it runs tight and flat across the print head.
    2. Reload the labels centred on the spindle, with the media guides touching the label edges.
    3. Set a suitable print density in the driver, your label software or TSC Console.
    9. Faded or poor printFaint, patchy, white lines or a grey line on blank labels

    CauseA dirty print head or platen roller, unsuitable density or speed, a ribbon that doesn't match the labels, or damaged print head dots.

    Fix

    1. Switch the printer off, let the print head cool for at least a minute, and clean it with a cotton swab and 99 % isopropyl alcohol. Clean the platen roller the same way with a lint-free cloth.
    2. Increase the density or reduce the speed in the driver, your label software or TSC Console.
    3. Use a ribbon type (wax, wax-resin or resin) that suits the labels.
    4. Print a self-test (release FEED during the amber blinks at switch-on). Missing dots in the test pattern mean a damaged print head; contact us.

    Dump mode and factory reset

    If the printer prints text or hex codes instead of your labels, it is in dump mode, which starts after the self-test. Switch it off and on again.

    To reset all settings, switch the printer off, hold FEED, switch it on and release FEED while the LED blinks green (after the red and amber blinks). Or select the printer in TSC Console and use Functions › Printer Configuration › Factory Default. Note your network settings first, and calibrate again afterwards.

    Frequently asked questions

    Why is the light on my TSC TE200 blinking red?

    It reports a printing error: usually labels or ribbon out, a jam, or an uncalibrated sensor. Check the labels and ribbon, close the print head and press FEED.

    How do I reset a TSC TE210 to factory settings?

    Hold FEED while switching on and release it during the green blinks (after the red and amber blinks), or use Factory Default in TSC Console.

    Why does my TSC printer print blank labels?

    Thermal transfer labels need a ribbon, and the ribbon's ink side must face the labels. Direct thermal labels must be loaded printable side up.
