TSC TE200 and TE210 setup guide: from unboxing to first label

Load the ribbon and labels, calibrate with the Feed button, install the TSC Windows driver and connect by USB, Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

    This guide takes a new TSC TE200 or TE210 from the box to the first printed label. Both are 203 dpi, 4-inch desktop printers that print either with a ribbon (thermal transfer) or on heat-sensitive labels without one (direct thermal). Setup is the same for both models, except for the network connections that only the TE210 has.

    You'll need
    • Labels 20–112 mm wide on a roll up to 127 mm in diameter, with a 25.4 mm (1 in) or 38 mm (1.5 in) core
    • For thermal transfer labels: a wax, wax-resin or resin ribbon 40–110 mm wide, wound with the ink on the outside (up to 300 m on a 1 in core, or up to 110 m on a 0.5 in core)
    • A Windows PC with administrator rights
    • The USB cable from the box, and a network cable for a TE210 on Ethernet

    Before you start

    Check the box

    The box contains the printer, a quick installation guide, a power cord, an external power supply, a USB cable, two 1 in ribbon spindles, an empty 1 in ribbon paper core, and a label spindle with two fixing tabs and two 1.5 in adapters. Labels and ribbon are not included.

    Know the controls

    The printer has one FEED button (TSC calls it the Feed/Pause button) and one LED that lights green, amber or red. There is no display. You open the top cover with the open tabs on both sides. Inside, the print head release button opens the print head mechanism, which holds the ribbon.

    Check which interfaces your model has

    • TE200: USB 2.0. Bluetooth is available only as a factory option.
    • TE210: USB 2.0, USB host, RS-232 serial and Ethernet. TSC lists Bluetooth and Wi-Fi as factory options.

    The ports are at the back of the printer. Factory options are fitted when the printer is built, so check the back of your printer or its product page (TE200, TE210).

    Load the ribbon

    Skip this step if you print on direct thermal labels. Labels that need a ribbon stay blank without one.

    1. Press the open tabs on both sides and lift the top cover.
    2. Slide the empty paper core onto the ribbon rewind spindle. Insert the right end of the spindle into the rewind hub first, then the left end into the green hub.
    3. Press the print head release button to open the print head mechanism.
    4. Slide the new ribbon onto the ribbon supply spindle and fit it into the supply hub the same way: the end marked R first, then the left end.
    5. Pull the ribbon leader past the print head and attach it to the paper core on the rewind spindle.
    6. Turn the rewind hub until the clear leader is wound up and the black ribbon covers the print head.
    7. Close the print head mechanism with both hands until both latches engage.

    Ribbons whose cores have notches on both sides can sit directly on the hubs, without a spindle.

    Load the labels

    1. Open the top cover if it is closed. Slide the label roll onto the media supply spindle and centre it with the two fixing tabs. For 4 in (about 100 mm) wide labels, remove the fixing tabs. For a 38 mm core, fit the 1.5 in adapters.
    2. Place the spindle with the roll in the roll mount.
    3. Press the print head release button to open the print head mechanism. Pull the labels through the media sensor, printable side up, and lay the leading edge over the platen roller.
    4. Slide the media guides against the edges of the labels.
    5. Close the print head mechanism with both hands until both latches engage, then close the top cover.
    Note

    The gap sensor is fixed, but the black-mark sensor can be moved. For labels with black marks, move it so the marks pass over it.

    Large rolls and fanfold labels

    The optional external roll mount attaches to the bottom of the printer and takes rolls up to 214 mm (8.4 in) in diameter on a 76.2 mm (3 in) core. The labels enter through the external label entrance chute at the back. Then load them as above and calibrate.

    Connect the cable and switch on

    1. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface and check that the power switch at the back is off.
    2. Plug the power supply into the power jack of the printer, then plug the power cord into a grounded wall outlet.
    3. Connect the USB cable to the printer and the PC.
    4. Switch the printer on. The LED turns solid green when the printer is ready.

    TSC asks you to switch the printer off before you plug the power supply into it.

    Calibrate the media sensor

    Calibration teaches the printer where each label starts. TSC recommends it every time you change media.

    1. Switch the printer off.
    2. Press and hold FEED, then switch the printer on. Keep holding.
    3. The LED lights amber, then blinks red five times. Release FEED while it blinks red.
    4. The printer feeds a few labels while it measures them. The LED turns solid green when it is ready.

    Important

    Watch the LED closely. If you hold FEED until it blinks green, the printer returns to factory defaults.

    Print a self-test

    Switch the printer off, hold FEED, switch it on and release FEED while the LED blinks amber (the second group, after the red blinks). The printer prints a self-test with a print head test pattern and then enters dump mode, in which it prints the data it receives as text instead of labels. Switch the printer off and on to return to normal operation.

    Once the printer is added in TSC Console, you can also print a configuration page there.

    Install the Windows driver

    TSC supplies a Windows driver made with Seagull Scientific. Install it with the printer connected and switched on.

    1. Download the Windows Driver from the Resources section of the TE Series product page. Check the supported Windows versions listed with the download.
    2. Unzip the file and run the driver wizard.
    3. Choose your model (TE200 or TE210) and the port it is connected to. For USB, select the USB port that the wizard finds.
    4. Finish the wizard and print a Windows test page.

    If Windows has already added the printer, check your list of printers before you add it a second time.

    Set the label size

    Open the printer's Printing preferences › Page Setup, click New under Stock, enter a name, width and height that match your labels exactly, and click OK. Then select this stock. TSC lists a wrong label size as a cause of jams, skipped labels and print in the wrong position.

    Connect the TE210 by Ethernet or Wi-Fi

    Network settings are made in TSC Console, TSC's free Windows tool for setup and diagnostics. Download it from the TSC Console page, start it, click Add Printers and choose USB.

    Important

    To meet the EU Radio Equipment Directive, TSC ships printers in the EU with network connectivity blocked. Before the first network connection, connect by USB and set Functions › PRTSecure › Security Mode to Standard in TSC Console. This needs TSC Console V3.4.0.5 or later.

    Ethernet

    1. Double-click the printer to open its configuration page and go to the Ethernet tab. Choose DHCP or enter a fixed IP address, subnet mask and gateway, and click Set. With DHCP, check the IP address the printer received.
    2. Connect the network cable. On the TSC Console main page, click Add Printer, select Network, enter the IP address and click Discover.
    3. In the Windows driver wizard, choose a network (TCP/IP) port with the same IP address.

    Wi-Fi (factory option)

    On the configuration page, click Get, then Wi-Fi. Enter the SSID, set the encryption to WPA-Personal, enter the key, switch DHCP on and click Set. The IP address should appear within about 5 to 15 seconds. If it doesn't, use Functions › Wi-Fi Default and set it up again. Then remove the USB cable, add the printer by its IP address and print a test page. Details are in the TSC Console user manual.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does the TSC TE200 need a ribbon?

    Only for thermal transfer labels. With direct thermal labels, the TE200 and TE210 print without a ribbon.

    Can the TE200 connect to a network?

    No. The TE200 has USB, with Bluetooth only as a factory option. For Ethernet or Wi-Fi, choose the TE210.

    Which driver do I use for the TSC TE210 on Windows 11?

    Use the TSC Windows Driver from the Resources section of the TE Series product page on tscprinters.com, and check the supported Windows versions listed with it.

    Why can't I connect the TE210 to my network?

    Printers sold in the EU ship with network connectivity blocked. Connect by USB and set the PRTSecure security mode to Standard in TSC Console first.

    Can the TE200 or TE210 print 4 × 6 in shipping labels?

    Yes. Both print up to 108 mm wide and take labels up to 112 mm wide, so 100 × 150 mm labels fit. Set a 100 × 150 mm stock in the driver and calibrate after loading.
