Zebra MC9400 troubleshooting: charging, battery, scanner, Wi-Fi
Charge LED colours, battery errors, hot swap, a scanner that will not read, keypad modes, Wi-Fi drops and freezes on the MC9400 and MC9450, with fixes.
In this guide
Most MC9400 problems come down to the battery, the charger, a keypad mode or a setting. Find what you see and open the matching fix. Everything here also applies to the MC9450.

Fixes
1. MC9400 won't turn on or chargeNo response to Power, charge LED off
CauseThe battery is empty or not locked in, or the device is not seated or the charger has no power.
Fix
- Take the battery out and refit it. Press it in until the latches on both sides click into place.
- Check the charger's power supply and cables.
- If the device has a rubber boot, remove its lower part (or the whole boot). Zebra says the cradle and snap-on cup do not work properly with it fitted.
- Seat the device and press down gently. The LED should turn amber; a very empty battery blinks amber slowly at first.
- Still nothing? Try a charged spare battery.
2. Charge LED blinks red or stays redFast blinking red or solid red
CauseFast blinking red (two blinks per second) means a charging error: the temperature is too low or too high, or charging took too long (typically 8 hours). Solid red means the battery has reached the end of its useful life.
Fix
- Move the device and cradle to room temperature. Charging stops below 0 °C and above 40 °C (Zebra's 1-slot cradle table gives 5 to 40 °C).
- Take the device out, wait a few seconds and reseat it.
- If another battery charges normally, or the LED is solid red, replace the battery. The Battery Manager app shows "Decommission" for a battery past its useful life.
3. "Battery pack communication error"Message on the screen
CauseThe battery is not inserted properly, strong vibration or a fall from more than 2.4 m interrupted the contact, or the battery communication pin is damaged.
Fix
- Remove the battery and insert it again until both latches click.
- If it returns, clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol following Zebra's battery connector cleaning steps.
- If a different battery works, replace the first one.
4. Changing the battery during a shiftScreen dark, LED slow blinking amber
CauseNormal hot swap: with the battery out, the display turns off, the slow amber blink shows the connection is being held, and memory is kept for about five minutes.
Fix
- Fit a charged battery within five minutes, press it in until it clicks, then press Power.
- If sessions are lost, the swap took too long or the backup capacitor was not charged: Zebra says it needs at least 15 minutes of charging.
5. The scanner does not read barcodesNo beep, no data in the app
CauseDataWedge is off or not set up for your app, no text field has focus, the barcode type is disabled, or the barcode is damaged or out of range. On a low battery the scanner switches off before the low-battery warning appears.
Fix
- Touch the text field so the cursor blinks, then hold the trigger.
- If there is no aiming beam at all, check the battery level and charge or swap the battery.
- Test with Zebra's DWDemo app. If DWDemo reads the barcode but your app does not, fix the DataWedge profile for your app with our DataWedge setup guide. Enable the barcode type there too.
- If nothing decodes until the crosshair is right on the barcode, Picklist mode is on. Aim the crosshair at the barcode you want.
- Clean the exit window and change the distance: further away for large barcodes, closer for small, dense ones.
6. The keypad types the wrong charactersCapitals, symbols, letters instead of numbers
CauseA modifier is locked: a double press locks the blue or orange key and SHIFT, and blue + SHIFT turns on Caps Lock. Keys can also be remapped.
Fix
- Look at the status bar. Icons show when the blue key, SHIFT, CTRL or ALT is active or locked.
- Press the locked key again until its icon disappears. The blue and orange keys return to normal on the third press.
- If a key misbehaves in every app, check Settings › Key Programmer or ask your administrator. Zebra advises against remapping the scan key.
7. Wi-Fi won't connect or keeps droppingMissing networks, drops in parts of the site
CauseWrong country or band settings, the wrong security type, or weak coverage.
Fix
- Open Settings › Network & internet › Internet, scroll to the bottom and touch Network preferences › Additional Settings.
- Check that Country Selection shows your country.
- Under Band and Channel Selection, set Wi-Fi frequency band to Auto unless your administrator wants one band only.
- Forget the network and join it again with the right security type and password.
- If drops happen in one area only, ask your administrator to check coverage there.
8. The MC9400 freezes or apps keep closingNo response to touch or keys, "memory full"
CauseAn app or the system has stopped responding, or the internal storage is full.
Fix
- Press and hold Power until the menu appears and touch Restart. Apps, data and settings are kept.
- If the device does not react at all, Zebra's hard reset for the MC9400 is: hold the trigger, Power and the scan key together for at least 6 seconds, and release them when the Zebra logo appears.
- For "memory full", uninstall unused apps and delete old files.
- For Enterprise and Factory Reset, see Reset a Zebra Android device. These erase data, so try a restart first.

Frequently asked questions
What does the slow blinking amber LED on the MC9400 mean?
While charging, the battery is too empty to run the device yet. After you remove the battery, it means hot swap is holding the connection.
Can I change the MC9400 battery without turning it off?
Yes. The MC9400 supports hot swap and keeps its memory for about five minutes while the battery is out.
How do I hard reset a frozen Zebra MC9400?
Hold the trigger, Power and the scan key together for at least 6 seconds and release them when the Zebra logo appears. Apps and data are kept, but unsaved work can be lost.
