On the Newland MT93, the built-in scanner is set up in the Quick Settings app, not in Zebra DataWedge. This guide covers the settings most apps need: how the data reaches your app, Enter or Tab after each scan, prefix and suffix, barcode types, scan keys and copying the setup to more devices. It applies to the MT93 Standard Plus and Pro.

    You'll need
    • A Newland MT93 (Standard Plus or Pro)
    • The app you want to scan into, installed on the device
    • A few test barcodes, ideally from your real labels

    Before you start

Tap the Quick Settings app on the Home screen and then the Scan tile. The Scanner screen opens with two tabs: Setting, where you change the options below, and Test, where you can scan to check your settings. Make sure Enable scan is ticked; if it is not, the scanner does not read at all.

Most options open a small dialog. Confirm each change with OK.

    Choose the output mode

Tap Output Mode and choose how the scanned data reaches your app:

Output mode What it does Use it when
Simulate keystroke Sends the data through the keyboard buffer, as if typed Your app expects keyboard input, for example a web form or a stock app with a text field
Fill in EditText directly Writes the data at the cursor position in the active text field Your app uses standard Android text fields and you want the data placed straight into the field
Output via API Sends the data as a system broadcast that the app receives Your app was written for the Newland scanner interface and the developer asks for it
    • Character interval (ms): with Simulate keystroke you can add 0–100 ms between characters. Increase it if characters go missing.
    • Overwrite output: clears the text field before each scan, so only the latest barcode is in it. Available with Simulate keystroke and Fill in EditText directly.
    • Broadcast-output settings: with Output via API, the data goes out with the broadcast ACTION and EXTRA set here. Use the values your app developer gives you.

Add Enter or Tab after each scan

Many apps need Enter to confirm a scan. In Output Mode, tick Output enter-event. The MT93 then sends an Enter key after each barcode.

Some apps react to the keyboard's action button (Done, Search) rather than Enter. For those, tick Send virtual keyboard function in the same dialog and pick the action, for example IME_ACTION_DONE.

You can also add a control character as a suffix (next step). Newland's examples are 0D for a carriage return and 0A for a line feed. A Tab character is 09 in ASCII; Newland doesn't give it as an example, so test it in your app.

    Tip

Use only one end-of-scan character. If Output enter-event is on and the suffix is also 0D, your app may receive two confirmations per scan.

    Add a prefix or suffix

    1. Tap Prefix & Suffix.
    2. Tick Prefix (hex) or Suffix (hex), or both.
    3. Enter the characters as hexadecimal values, for example 0D.
    4. Tap OK and scan into your app to check the result.

For more complex changes, such as cutting or reordering parts of a barcode, the Data edit option runs a script that you load from a file or from a 2D barcode.

Turn barcode types on or off

    1. On the Setting tab, open Symbologies.
    2. Choose the 1D code or 2D code tab.
    3. Tick the barcode types you use and untick the ones you don't. Tap DETAIL next to a type for its own options, such as length limits.

The available barcode types depend on the scan engine; the MT93 Standard Plus and Pro both use the CM66 imager. Under 1D Common Config you can raise the security level (default 1) if you see misreads, but higher levels read less smoothly. The full parameter list is in Newland's Symbologies Configuration Handbook.

On the Advanced tab, Acuscan Decoding decodes only the barcode that the aiming pattern points at squarely, which helps when labels sit close together. Multiple Barcodes reads several barcodes at once.

Set the scan keys and scan mode

Under Scan Trigger, tick the keys that start a scan: Left/Right SCAN key for the side keys, and Stock SCAN key for the trigger on an MT93 pistol grip.

Under Scan Mode, choose how a key press scans:

    • Level mode: scans while you hold the key.
    • Continuous mode: one press starts continuous reading, the next press pauses it.
    • Pulse mode: one press scans until the decode session timeout ends.
    • Delay mode (Scan on release key): hold to aim, release to scan. Newland recommends it with Acuscan Decoding for closely spaced barcodes.

Good Read Indicator sets the confirmation for a good read: a beep, vibration, a single blue LED flash, or a combination.

Give a key a different job

All physical keys except Power can be remapped. In Quick Settings, open Key Remap, select the key, then choose keys to make it act as another key, apps to open an app, or broadcast to send a broadcast. Clear All Remap returns to the defaults.

    Test and copy the setup

Switch to the Test tab of the Scanner screen and scan a few real labels. Then test in your own app.

To copy the same setup to more MT93 devices, open Backup Recovery in Quick Settings, select the app settings and tap BACKUP. The MT93 shows a QR code; tap Save to store it with a JSON file in the NLSBackupSettings folder. On the next device, scan that QR code, or copy the JSON file into its NLSBackupSettings folder and tap RECOVER. For larger fleets, Newland's free Ndevor management software can push settings centrally.

    Note

If a Newland tool such as Key Remap is missing, it may not be preinstalled on your software version. Newland's app guide lists it among the apps you can install with the Newland Installer app.

For device setup, see the MT93 setup guide. If the scanner still does not read, see MT93 troubleshooting.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Newland MT93 use DataWedge?

No. DataWedge is Zebra software. On the MT93 you set up the scanner in the Quick Settings app under Scan.

How do I add Enter after every scan on the MT93?

Open Quick Settings, tap Scan, then Output Mode, and tick Output enter-event. Alternatively, set the suffix to hex 0D under Prefix & Suffix, but don't use both.

Why does the MT93 scan in the Test tab but not in my app?

Check the output mode. Keyboard-based apps need Simulate keystroke or Fill in EditText directly; Output via API only works with apps written for it. Also tap into the text field before you scan.

Can the MT93 read several barcodes at once?

Yes. Turn on Multiple Barcodes on the Advanced tab of Symbologies and set the maximum number of barcodes.
