Calibrate a Honeywell PC42E-T or PC42E-D label printer

Set the sensor for gap or black-mark labels, calibrate with the print button, choose fast or slow ECO calibration and fix skipped labels.

    The PC42E-T and PC42E-D find the start of each label with a media sensor. Calibration (Honeywell calls it a testfeed) measures your labels so every print lands in the same place. You start it with the print button; the web page and PrintSet let you choose how it works.

    You'll need
    • The labels you want to print, loaded in the printer (and the ribbon, if you print thermal transfer on the PC42E-T)
    • A few spare labels: calibration feeds several through
    • For the web page: the printer on your network and its IP address

    When to calibrate

    • When you set up the printer for the first time.
    • When you change to labels of a different size or type.
    • After a reset to factory defaults.
    • When labels skip, the print crosses the gap, or the printer keeps feeding.
    • When the Status LED blinks red although labels are loaded. Honeywell lists "no testfeed performed" as one cause.

    Set the media sensor for your labels

    Open the cover and the print and ribbon mechanism. The media sensor has a tab in the middle: slide it to the position for your labels. The PC42E-D quick start guide shows the same three media types.

    Check that the labels run under the print and ribbon mechanism and out of the front, with the media holders against the edges. Lower the mechanism until both locking tabs click and close the cover. Loading is explained step by step in the PC42E setup guide.

    Choose fast or slow calibration

    The ECO button switches between two calibration modes:

    • ECO lit green (fast): the printer calibrates with as little media as possible. Use it to save labels.
    • ECO off (slow): the printer measures over several labels. Use it when the printer has trouble finding the gaps or marks.

    On the web page, the same choice is the Media Calibration Mode setting (Fast or Slow). Honeywell's factory default is Slow.

    Calibrate with the print button

    1. Switch the printer on and wait until the Status LED is solid green.
    2. Press and hold Print (PC42E-D: Print/Feed) for 2 seconds, then release it.
    3. The printer feeds several labels while it measures them. Tear them off.
    4. Press the button once: the printer should feed exactly one label and stop at the start of the next one.

    Hold the button for about 6 seconds instead to calibrate and then print a configuration label with the current settings.

    On the PC42E-T, the hold action is set to Smart Calibration by default. Honeywell describes it as detecting the media type (gap, black mark or continuous), whether a ribbon is loaded, and the label length. You can change it to Testfeed under Configure › System Settings › General › Hold Feed Button Action.

    Important

    Don't hold the button while you switch the printer on unless you want to change the printer language. At start-up, the printer prints a sample label for each language, and a press selects the language that is printing. If that happens by mistake, set Command Language back to Autosense (the default) under Configure › System Settings › General and restart the printer.

    Check the media settings on the web page

    Enter the printer's IP address in a browser, click Login (the default login is printed in Honeywell's PC42E-T user guide) and open Configure › Printing › Media. Check these settings and click Save:

    • Media Type: matches your labels. The default is Media with Gaps.
    • Print Method (PC42E-T): thermal transfer with a ribbon, direct thermal without one. The default is Thermal Transfer.
    • Media Calibration Mode: Fast or Slow, as above.

    Under Configure › System Settings › General, Head Down Action controls what happens when you close the print mechanism. The default is Formfeed (one label). Set it to Testfeed if you change labels often: the printer then calibrates each time you close it and prints two configuration labels while doing so. PrintSet offers the same settings under Configuration. These paths come from the PC42E-T user guide.

    Match the label size in your software

    The printer also needs the correct label size from the PC. Enter the exact width and height of your labels in the InterDriver printing preferences and in your label software. A wrong label size in the software can make the print drift even after a good calibration.

    If labels still skip

    • Switch to slow calibration (ECO off) and calibrate again.
    • Check the sensor tab position and that the labels pass over the sensor.
    • Look for a stuck label. Honeywell's fix for a printer that keeps feeding is to remove any label blocking the label gap sensor and clean the printhead.
    • Fine-tune the start position with Label Top Adjust under Configure › Printing › Media. A positive value feeds more media before printing, a negative value pulls it back. The value is in dots: 8 dots are 1 mm at 203 dpi, 12 dots at 300 dpi.

    Frequently asked questions

    How do I calibrate a Honeywell PC42E-T?

    With the printer ready, hold the Print button for 2 seconds and release it. The printer feeds several labels and calibrates the sensor.

    What does the ECO button do on the PC42E?

    It switches calibration between fast (ECO lit, fewer labels used) and slow (ECO off, measured over several labels for media that is hard to detect).

    Do I need to calibrate after every new roll?

    No. Calibrate when you change to a different label size or type, or when labels start to skip.

    Why does my PC42E print a configuration label instead of calibrating only?

    You held the button for about 6 seconds. A 2-second hold calibrates only; a 6-second hold calibrates and then prints the configuration label.
