On the Honeywell ScanPal EDA52, the built-in imager is set up in the Android Settings app under Honeywell Settings, not in a separate wedge app. This guide covers what most apps need: Enter or Tab after each scan, a prefix, how the data reaches your app, barcode types, the scan mode and separate settings per app.

    You'll need
    • A Honeywell ScanPal EDA52
    • The app you want to scan into, installed on the device
    • A few test barcodes, ideally from your real labels

How the scan settings are organised

Swipe up on the Home screen, touch Settings and open Settings › Honeywell Settings › Scanning. There are two entries:

    • Internal Scanner for the built-in imager. It holds the Default profile plus any profiles you create for single apps.
    • Bluetooth Scanner for a paired Bluetooth scanner, with its own Default profile for data processing.

The Default profile applies to every app that has no profile of its own. Inside a profile you find Data Processing Settings, Symbology Settings, Decode Settings, Imager Settings, Trigger Settings and Notification Settings. OCR Settings appear only when a Smart OCR licence is installed. Leave the Imager Settings alone unless Honeywell support asks you to change them.

    Open the Default profile

Open Settings › Honeywell Settings › Scanning › Internal Scanner › Default profile. Changes here affect all apps without their own profile, so start here if every app on the device should behave the same way. If only one app needs special settings, create an app profile instead (see below).

Add Enter or Tab after each scan

Many stock and order apps need an Enter after the barcode to confirm the scan; others need a Tab to move to the next field. You add this as a suffix.

    1. In the profile, open Data Processing Settings and touch Suffix.
    2. Enter \n for Enter (line feed), \r for a carriage return or \t for Tab.
    3. Confirm and scan into your app to check the result.

Honeywell's substitution codes are \r (character 13), \n (10), \t (9) and \\ for a backslash. The setting Wedge as Keys lists characters that are sent as key presses rather than as text. Its default is 9,10,13, so Tab, line feed and carriage return reach your app as keys. Start with \n; if your app does not react to it, try \r.

    Tip

Use one end-of-scan character only. A suffix of \r\n may confirm a scan twice in some apps.

    Prefix and code identifier

Prefix works the same way and adds characters before the barcode data. Symbology Prefix can put a code identifier in front of each barcode (None, Honeywell or AIM), which some business systems use to tell barcode types apart. Both are off by default.

Choose how the data reaches your app

By default, Wedge is enabled: the EDA52 types the scanned data into the field that has the cursor, like a keyboard. This suits most apps and web forms. Tap into the text field before you scan.

    • Wedge Method: Standard (default) or Keyboard. If an app ignores the scanned data although the cursor is in the field, switching to Keyboard is one option to test.
    • Charset: the character set used to read the barcode data, ISO-8859-1 by default. Change it only if special characters such as õ, ä, ł or č arrive wrong and your labels use another encoding.
    • Data Intent (under Decode Settings): sends the data to apps written to receive it as an Android intent, without the Honeywell SDK. Use it only when your app developer asks for it.
    • Launch Browser and Scan to Intent: both are on by default. Launch Browser opens a web address from a scanned barcode in the browser. Turn it off if your labels contain URLs that should go into a field instead.

Turn barcode types on or off

    1. In the profile, open Symbology Settings.
    2. Tick a barcode type to enable it, untick it to disable it.
    3. Touch the name of a barcode type to change its other parameters.

Not every barcode type is enabled by default. If a barcode does not read at all, its type is often switched off. A failed scan lights the Scan Status LED red only when Bad Read Notification is turned on; it is off by default. Switch off the types you never use. If you see wrong reads, Decode Settings has a Decode Security level (default 2); higher values are stricter.

    Set the scan button behaviour

    Open Trigger Settings:

    • Enable Scan Trigger: lets the side Scan buttons start the imager. It is on by default; if the buttons do nothing, check it first.
    • Trigger Scan Mode: One Shot (default), Continuous, Read on release or Read on second trigger press. One Shot suits most work.
    • Decode Timeout: how long the imager keeps trying, 20 seconds by default.
    • Presentation Mode: off by default, with its own aimer and illumination options.

Under Notification Settings you set the good-read beep and LED, the bad-read notification (off by default) and optional vibration. Under Settings › Honeywell Settings you also find Digital Scan Button, which places an on-screen scan button, and Keyremap, which can give the left or right Scan button or a volume button another job.

Create a profile for one app

    1. Open Settings › Honeywell Settings › Scanning › Internal Scanner.
    2. Touch the add icon in the upper right corner.
    3. Enter a profile name, or touch select an application and pick the app.
    4. Open the new profile in the list and change its settings, for example a Tab suffix for one app and Enter for all others.

To delete a profile, touch and hold it, choose Delete and confirm with OK.

Test, restore and copy the settings

Test the result in the Scan Demo app (swipe up, then Demos › Scan Demo), then in your own app. If the settings get mixed up, open the profile, touch the menu icon in the upper right corner and choose Restore all defaults. All settings in that profile return to their factory values.

For many devices, Honeywell's preinstalled HQ Config app deploys settings, scan settings and apps offline, and EZConfig (in Power Tools, with an EZConfig editor for the PC) creates configuration files and configuration barcodes. Installing settings from a configuration barcode needs Provisioning Mode, which you turn on under Settings › Honeywell Settings › Provisioning Mode. Details are in the EDA52 User Guide, listed on the Honeywell EDA52 product page.

For first setup, see the EDA52 setup guide. If the scanner still does not read, see EDA52 troubleshooting.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Honeywell EDA52 use DataWedge?

No. DataWedge is Zebra software. On the EDA52 you set up the scanner under Settings › Honeywell Settings › Scanning › Internal Scanner.

How do I add Enter after every scan on the EDA52?

Open the Default profile, then Data Processing Settings › Suffix, and enter \n. Test in your app; if it needs a carriage return, use \r instead.

Why does the EDA52 read in Scan Demo but not in my app?

Tap into the text field before you scan and check that Wedge is enabled. If the app has its own scan profile, check that profile, because it overrides the Default profile.

Why does a barcode not scan on the EDA52?

The most common cause is a disabled barcode type. Enable it under Symbology Settings in the profile the app uses.
