The Gryphon 4200 family shares one scanner design: the GD4200 connects with a cable, the GBT4200 is cordless with Bluetooth and a charging base. This guide connects either model to a PC, charges and links the GBT4200, and checks the first scan.

    You'll need
    • The GD4220-BKK1 kit (scanner and 2 m USB cable) or the GBT4200-BK-BTK1 kit (scanner, WLC4190 base station and 2 m USB cable)
    • A PC or POS terminal with a free USB-A port
    • For a direct Bluetooth link without the base: a PC, tablet or phone with Bluetooth
    • The Gryphon I GD/GBT/GM4200 Product Reference Guide (PRG) for programming barcodes, from the Downloads section of Datalogic's Gryphon 4200 support page

    Before you start

    Which model you have

Both models are linear (1D) imagers. They read 1D barcodes such as EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39 and GS1 DataBar, also from phone screens, but not 2D codes such as QR or Data Matrix. They aim with a soft line viewfinder: a light line that you place across the barcode.

    • GD4220-BKK1: the corded Gryphon I GD4220, USB only, with a USB-A cable (90A052258, 2 m). The PC powers it through the cable.
    • GBT4200-BK-BTK1: the cordless Gryphon GBT4200 with the WLC4190-BK-BT Bluetooth base station and the same USB cable. The base charges the scanner without contacts (inductive charging) and passes its data to the PC.

Datalogic also makes the GM4200, a cordless model with its own STAR radio instead of Bluetooth. It needs a STAR base and does not pair with phones or PCs. Contact us at once if anything in your kit is missing or damaged.

Connect the GD4200 to the PC

Skip this step if you have the cordless GBT4200.

    1. Push the cable connector into the bottom of the handle until it clicks. The small clip on the connector goes on the same side as the release hole on the back of the handle.
    2. Plug the USB-A end into the PC or POS terminal. The scanner powers up with four beeps.
    3. The scanner detects the USB cable and starts as a USB keyboard. Scans are typed wherever the cursor is, with no driver to install.

To remove the cable later, push a straightened paper clip into the release hole on the back of the handle, hold it pressed and pull the cable out.

    Tip

For hands-free scanning, for example at a counter, Datalogic sells a stand for the Gryphon. The GD4200 detects when you put it in the stand and switches to hands-free scanning by itself.

    Connect the GBT4200 base station

    1. Switch off the PC or terminal, as Datalogic recommends.
    2. Push the USB cable fully into the port on the underside of the base. Connect the interface cable before you connect any power adapter.
    3. Plug the other end into a USB-A port on the PC and switch the PC on. The base's Power/Data light shows steady green when the base has power.

Datalogic prefers the flat (horizontal) position on a desk, because the scanner docks most easily. Where desk space is short, the base can stand vertically, no higher than 2 m. Wall mounting needs Datalogic's mounting adapter, sold separately.

    Charge the GBT4200

New scanners ship with only a low charge, so charge the battery fully before first use. Put the scanner in the base: a chirp confirms that the base has detected it. The base's charging light shows progress:

Charging light on the base Meaning
Red, fading Pre-charge of a very flat battery
Amber, fading Battery up to 50 %
    Green, fading Battery 51–99 %
    Green, steady Fully charged

How long a full charge takes depends on how the base gets its power. With the kit's USB cable on a PC port, the base charges slowly: about 10 hours from empty. Datalogic gives about 4.5 hours with a USB Type-C cable and about 4 hours with external power. Datalogic lists externally powered USB cables for the WLC4190 and a 12 V power adapter; ask us which combination fits your host. A full charge is good for about 80,000 reads, according to Datalogic.

To check the battery while the scanner is out of the base, double-tap the top of the scanner head. The battery light shows green (50–100 %) or amber (2–50 %) for 3 seconds, or blinks red below 2 %.

    Note

Charge only at 0–40 °C. The scanner may get warm while it charges, which is normal. A spare scanner in storage needs at least 30 minutes of charging every three months.

Link the GBT4200 to the base

Put the scanner in the base. Placing it in the base links the two, so scans now go through the base to the PC.

A scanner that was linked to another base before does not switch over on its own. Scan the Unlink barcode first, then put the scanner in the new base. Unlink is in the section "Linking the Reader" of the PRG.

Datalogic states a range of up to 100 m in open air. Walls, shelving and metal reduce it.

Or pair the GBT4200 directly over Bluetooth

Skip this step if you use the base. Without the base, the scanner pairs with the host's own Bluetooth. With the HID profile it works like a wireless keyboard:

    1. Using a keyboard layout other than US? Set the Country Mode first, as described in Gryphon 4200 programming. The PRG asks for the keyboard settings before you connect to a Bluetooth HID host.
    2. If the host uses a USB Bluetooth adapter, install the adapter's driver first.
    3. Scan Link to Host in HID mode from "Linking the Reader". The scanner becomes visible to other devices.
    4. On the host, open the Bluetooth settings, search for new devices and select the entry that starts with GBT4200.
    5. If the host shows a passkey or PIN, enter it by scanning the barcodes in the PRG's Keypad appendix, then scan Passkey END. To start the entry again, scan Passkey Restart.
    6. Open the program that should receive the data and scan a barcode.

For software that reads a serial port, scan Link to Host in SPP Mode instead, pair the same way and read the data on the COM port that the host assigns. If pairing fails with an error, the Bluetooth Security Level in the PRG's Bluetooth-Only Features section may need to change. To use the base again later, put the scanner back in the base. If it does not link, scan Unlink first.

    Check the interface

Both models work as a USB keyboard by default, which suits almost every program. Change the interface only if your software asks for something else:

    • Select USB-COM-STD: the scanner appears as a virtual COM port, for software that reads a serial port.
    • Select USB Standard Keyboard: back to keyboard mode. The Quick Reference Guide calls the same barcode Select USB Keyboard.

The interface barcodes are in the PRG section "Configuring the Interface". Each takes effect with one scan; don't scan ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE before it. On the GBT4200, link the scanner to the base first. Some interfaces start the scanner in a disabled state; to program it in that state, hold the trigger for 5 seconds.

    Test a scan

    1. Open Notepad or another text editor and click in the window.
    2. Pull the trigger and place the aiming line across the whole barcode.
    3. A good read gives one beep, the green good-read lights on the scanner and Datalogic's Green Spot on the barcode.
    4. Check the text. If the cursor jumps to the next line, the scanner sent Enter after the barcode, which is the factory setting.

Letters or symbols come out wrong, or you want a Tab instead of Enter? See Gryphon 4200 programming. Scanner beeps but nothing appears? See Gryphon 4200 troubleshooting.

Fine-tune the settings with Aladdin (optional)

Datalogic Aladdin is Datalogic's free configuration program for its handheld scanners. It changes the scanner settings from a PC and can create configuration barcodes to print. Download it from the Datalogic software downloads page. Without Aladdin, you program the scanner with the barcodes in the PRG: most settings start and end with the ENTER/EXIT PROGRAMMING MODE barcode.

All our guides for these scanners are on the GD4200 guides page and the GBT4200 guides page. Still deciding between the two? See GD4200 vs GBT4200.

    Frequently asked questions

Does the Gryphon GD4200 need a driver?

No. In its default USB keyboard mode it works like a keyboard, so Windows needs no extra driver. Only the USB-COM interface needs extra setup on the PC.

Can the Gryphon 4200 read QR codes?

No. The GD4200 and GBT4200 are linear imagers for 1D barcodes. For QR and other 2D codes you need a 2D scanner.

Can I use the GBT4200 without the base station?

Yes. Scan Link to Host in HID mode and pair the scanner with the host's Bluetooth. You still need a Gryphon 4200 charging base to charge it.

Why does charging take so long?

A base powered only by the PC's USB port charges slowly, about 10 hours from empty. External power cuts this to about 4 hours.

How do I move the GBT4200 to a different base?

Scan the Unlink barcode from the PRG, then place the scanner in the new base.
